Police have arrested the graduate student for using the laboratory to produce drugs from cold medicine.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office reported that 25-year-old Mr. Hwang (25) was arrested on suspicions of violating the Narcotics Control Act.
Mr. Hwang is suspected of manufacturing 13 grams of methamphetamines between October and November 2016 in a laboratory at Yonsei University’s Chemical Engineering department.
The prosecutor’s investigation revealed that Mr. Hwang received a request to make the meth so he made it in the laboratory that he worked at. Last month, prosecutors searched his home and the laboratory and discovered the cold medicine that he used to create the meth.
Police also arrested another Mr. Hwang (32) last month on suspicions of using cold medicine to create drugs in order to pay his living expenses. This Mr. Hwang graduated from a university in Seoul but ended up creating a woodworking factory and made furniture.
Since his business was not doing well, he learned how to make drugs through the internet and books. Over a span of 3 months, he produced 500 grams of meth, making a total of ₩1.6 billion won ($1.4 million USD).
