ITZY’s Lia Reveals Heartbreaking Confession Of How Not Being Good At Dancing Has Taken A Toll On Her

Fans are devastated to hear how much she’s struggled.

ITZY has enjoyed remarkable success since their debut last year, and all the praise for today’s August 17 comeback, “Not Shy”, is yet another example of that. However, all the members have face hardships on the road to stardom. Take Lia, for example, who revealed today that her difficulty with dancing has taken a toll on her.

Since ITZY’s debut, Lia has been subject to harsh criticism over her dancing. Many netizens accused her of being lazy and not putting her all into the group’s performances.

Naturally, MIDZYs have come to her defense every time. While Lia may not be the most skilled dancer of the group, fans have watched her work hard to improve. Many have pointed out that not every idol can move their body as well as a professional dancer; it doesn’t necessarily mean those idols are lazy or don’t care.

But the truly sad part of malicious comments surrounding Lia’s dancing is that she’s actually seen them. During ITZY’s live premiere broadcast for “Not Shy”, Lia made a heartbreaking confession of how the criticism has affected her.

Lia told fans that every K-Pop group has their own concept and direction. For ITZY, that’s dancing and stage presence.

My team members are all so good at dancing, and the performance is really what amplified the concept of our team. Even I can see that they are most attractive and enchanting when they’re dancing.

Lia went on to explain that she knows her dancing skills don’t match up to the other members, but that doesn’t mean she’s not trying her best.

I can actually see and feel other members enjoying themselves on stage, and that’s when I realize I’m a little bit different from them. It doesn’t mean that I don’t like to be a part of the performance, it’s just that I’m not good at it…

— Lia

While intense choreography seemed to be effortless for many of the ITZY members at debut, Lia said she found “Dalla Dalla” very difficult. She could see what she was lacking, and as a result, she couldn’t enjoy her debut period to its fullest. While the group was making huge achievements, from awards to music show wins, Lia felt like she was letting the group down.

People around me were happy for me, and we’ve had good achievements, but I couldn’t accept this positive situation with just a feeling of joy. I felt apologetic, guilty, and as if I was doing something wrong.

— Lia

Even the rehearsals put stress on Lia, and she admitted that the group’s rookie period was a very difficult time for her. She told fans that she was “struggling a lot“, and that she “wasn’t confident as Lia of ITZY“.

ITZY’s performance is truly great, and I love ITZY, but trying to be ITZY is…

— Lia

But thankfully, just like ITZY preaches in their songs, Lia’s confidence has been growing since then. She reassured fans that as time passes, she’s feeling better and adjusting more to the pressure.

What always made me feel better was thinking about how time passes no matter what. In that, time is reliable. Even if I’m struggling right now, I know that it will pass someday. I think people around me are saying that I overcame the tough time because I endured it.

— Lia

Lia went on to share some wise words about the concept of endurance, and how she relied on the passage of time to get her through the hardships. Despite her young age of just 20, she has a truly deep outlook on overcoming pressure.

“Endurance” or the concept of “holding on” is not something that we can exactly clarify, but I think in most people’s subconscious, it may be taken as a weak, negative expression rather than a positive one. However, actually I think toughing it out and bearing something is the hardest thing of all. It means at the very least, I didn’t give in and I didn’t lose. And to me, not losing means winning.

— Lia

Fans hope that ITZY’s Lia continues to grow in confidence and comfort with every comeback. After all, with all the work she’s put in, as well as her natural talent for singing and bright personality, she’s more than earned her success.

In the end, you have to trust yourself and keep going, right? Have to move on step by step. I think “holding on” carries a big meaning for me.
