On stage, BTS‘s V is a charismatic singer who can enthrall millions with a single note. Behind the scenes, he’s a creative genius who pours his heart and soul into making music.
A new interview with Weverse Magazine takes readers behind the scenes of V’s songwriting process for “Singularity,” “Stigma,” “Scenery,” and more.
On May 7, 2018, BTS released V’s solo “Singularity” in the teaser video for their album, LOVE YOURSELF: Tear. In it, V croons heartbreaking lyrics while putting on a mesmerizing performance.
It’s ringing again, that sound
A crack again on this frozen lake
I dumped myself into the lake
I buried my voice for you
— “Singularity” lyrics (English translation)
For V, performance was always a vital part of the song’s creation.
Because I was thinking ahead for the accompanying performance, ‘Singularity’ ended up being a song completely full of syllables with no white space. If there wasn’t going to be a performance, it would have ended up a completely different song.
“Performance” isn’t just about what happens on stage. Performance also played a role in the recording process. Recording engineer Pdogg, who arranged the song’s vocals, helped V evoke the “seductive” mood “Singularity” called for by turning off the lights.
It’s extremely hard to groove to a song like ‘Singularity’ when the rhythm’s got a sort of lay back and there are so many intricate parts. Most of all, it had to feel seductive, so we even turned off all the lights when we recorded it.
Now, Pdogg’s method has fans feeling a bit flustered!
