Korea’s Most Talented Actresses Come Together To Prove Sex Does Not Matter

Korea’s top actresses join Marie Claire for a gender free reading of movie scripts to prove women can play any role.

Marie Claire Korea released a video of seven actresses reading scripts from popular scenes of Korea’s most well known movies. This “Gender Free Reading” campaign made a statement that in acting, sex does not matter.

 

1. Kim So Yeon

“You always run your mouth. Watch what you say, it could get you killed.”

Actress Kim So Yeon read lines from the movie, “New World”. She is portraying the character of Lee Joong Gu, originally played by actor Park Sung Woong.

 

2. Moon So Ri

“Can’t we just date? It’s not a big deal. Having fun with someone you like, that’s a date!”

Actress Moon So Ri recreates the scene by the character Lee Yu Rim, originally played by Park Hae Il. In “Rules of Dating”, this character is ceaselessly pursuing a co-worker for a date.

 

3. Kim Sae Byuk

“Why did you do this me? Tell me, why did you do this?”

Actress Kim Sae Byuk read these lines from the finale of the movie, “A Bittersweet Life”. In this scene, Seon Woo, the character originally played by actor Lee Byung Hun, is confronting another character at gunpoint.

 

4. Han Ye Ri

“Laugh, and the world laughs with you; weep, and you weep alone.”

This line, actually a quote from Ella Wheeler Wilcox’s poem “Solitude”, is from the movie “Old Boy”. There is a poster of this quote on the wall of the cell where actor Choi Min Sik‘s character Oh Dae Soo is imprisoned. Actress Han Ye Ri read the quote, recreating the eery feel of the Korean classic film.

 

5. Kim Hyang Gi

“That’s how I feel right now. I’m so annoyed.”

Actress Kim Hyang Gi recreated this famous scene from the movie “Veteran”. The role Jo Tae Oh, played by actor Yoo Ah In, says this to express his frustration with the situation. The line, “I’m so annoyed“is one of the most repeated lines, in the way it’s said in the movie, by Koreans stars and fans alike.

 

6. Jin Kyeong

“To be, or not to be: that is the question”

Actress Jin Kyeong read this well-known line from the play “Hamlet”. In Korea, from actor Kim Kang Woo to musical star Lee Ji Hoon, the role of Hamlet is almost always portrayed by a male star.

 

7. Choi Hee Seo

“You can keep writing poems. I will take the gun.”

Actress Choi Hee Seo read these lines from the movie “DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet”, originally said by the character of Song Mong Gyu  played by actor Park Jung Min. The movie, based on the true story of poet Yun Dong Ju and patriot Song Mong Gyu, inspired many Koreans.
