10 K-Pop Idols Who Debuted With Different Positions Than They Were Supposed To

Some made pretty drastic changes!

While the positions in a K-Pop group can be somewhat fluid, generally an idol is given a certain position for a reason, most likely because it’s what they’re most skilled in. However, some idols actually end up debuting as something different than they were originally supposed to be! Here are 10 K-Pop idols who trained for one position in a K-Pop group, but ended up being something else.

1. S.Coups (SEVENTEEN)

It may be hard to picture SEVENTEEN’s rapping king as anything but, but the hip-hop unit member was actually supposed to be a vocalist before debut!

2. Seulgi (Red Velvet)

Seulgi is best-known for her role as Red Velvet’s main dancer, but before Wendy joined them as trainees, she was actually going to be the group’s main vocalist! And she definitely still has the abilities for it.

3. Jackson (GOT7)

Before Jackson became a trainee, he trained to become a vocalist. However, during his training he discovered rapping and switched to focus on that instead, becoming GOT7’s main rapper!

4. Seonghwa (ATEEZ)

ATEEZ’s soothing-voiced lead vocalist Seonghwa wasn’t originally set to have that position, and actually trained to be a rapper for a while! Recently, he had the opportunity to show his rapping skills in some of ATEEZ’s songs.

5. Jihyo (TWICE)

TWICE’s leader and main vocalist Jihyo definitely has the skills to fit both roles perfectly, but in her early training days she was actually on track to become the group’s main dancer! And based on how amazing of a dancer she is, she could definitely still have the position.

6. Wooseok (PENTAGON)

PENTAGON’s maknae Wooseok went through a couple of changes before becoming the group’s main rapper! When he first joined Cube Entertainment it was as a model, but after he changed his mind to become an idol, he first trained as a vocalist. It was later on that he discovered his rapping abilities!

7. Soyeon ((G)I-DLE)

(G)I-DLE’s main rapper and leader Soyeon once revealed that she auditioned for over 20 different entertainment companies before she was accepted into Cube Entertainment. At this time, she was auditioning as a vocalist, and it wasn’t until she changed to rapping that she started getting callbacks from labels.

8. Jaehyun (NCT)

It’s obvious why Jaehyun is a main vocalist of NCT with his abilities, but during pre-debut era as a member of SM Rookies, he was actually a rapper! He still does do some rapping in NCT’s songs, but his main position is as a vocalist.

9. Rocky (ASTRO)

Rocky may be the lead rapper of ASTRO — a well-deserved position — but he originally trained to be a vocalist instead! He was even able to cover some of SHINee main vocalist Jonghyun‘s parts in a cover of “Replay”, including the ending high note.

10. Moonbyul (MAMAMOO)

Moonbyul originally auditioned and trained as a vocalist when she joined RBW, but after being put into a group with power vocalists SolarWheein, and Hwasa, she was assigned to become a rapper instead. And she holds the position well!
