For this year’s “Best Actor” award, the ceremony has an impressive list of actors who are competing to be crowned this year’s winner. Netizens have dubbed these actors as “acting geniuses” and understandably so. These 5 actors have impressed the public with their productions so no matter who wins, it would be well-deserved. 1.  Lee Joon Gi

First up, we have actor Lee Joon Gi and his nomination for his portrayal as Baek Hee Sung in Flower of Evil. Lee Joon Gi’s character for this K-drama received praise for his ability to act as a deceiving character. While his character Baek Hee Sung was married and lived with a family, he had a cruel past that he was hiding from his wife. The deception, lies and emotional acting was portrayed through Lee Joon Gi’s facial expressions and through his action scenes.

2. Kim Soo Hyun

Next up we have one of South Korea’s top actors, Kim Soo Hyun. In 2019, Kim Soo Hyun was in the mega-hit series, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay where he portrayed the character, Moon Kang Tae. The series garnered heavy attention for its plot, which tackled the topic of mental health as his character, Moon Kang Tae worked in a psychiatric ward. Kim Soo Hyun’s character not only worked in a psychiatric ward, but he was also the caretaker of his brother in the K-drama, who lived with a mental disability. Due to its plot, the series dealt with many emotional scenes with Kim Soo Hyun stealing the show with his expressive acting.

3. Song Joong Ki

Actor Song Joong Ki comes in third on this list of acting geniuses and truth be told, no one is surprised. He recently portrayed an Italian mafia member who was merciless and cold throughout the series. Song Joong Ki’s portrayal as Vincenzo in the series with the same title allowed the actor to expand his repertoire from romantic comedies to a much darker genre. His portrayal as a “dark hero” allowed him to show off his charisma and action skills.

4. Shim Ha Kyun

Next up, we have veteran actor Shim Ha Kyun. The actor was recently in JTBC‘s murder-mystery series titled Beyond Evil where he played the role of a detective. His character, Lee Dong Sik is a veteran detective who works tirelessly to catch a serial killer within a small town who resurfaces after 20 years. The thriller K-drama, as well as Shim Ha Kyun’s portrayal as a detective received high praise from the public for his absorption of his role.

5. Um Ki Joon

Um Ki Joon for “Penthouse” | SBS

Last, but most definitely not least is Um Ki Joon from Penthouse. The mega-popular K-drama went on to see viral popularity, as both seasons of the series maintained high viewership ratings throughout its entire duration. Um Ki Joon played the role of Joo Dan Tae and his portrayal was so accurate, his character was hated by the nation. The crazy plot of this series involved murder, assault, infidelity and more, which Um Ki Joon’s character continuously took part in. His scary gaze and sharp acting skills became the talk of the town, which is why his nomination is well-deserved.
