Hollywood and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega made a visit to Seoul on December 9th to promote the newest Star Wars film, meeting boy group EXO at a fan event.
EXO, who sings the theme track for the Korean version of the film called “Lightsaber,” met up with some of the cast of the latest Star Wars film, specifically members Chanyeol, Sehun, and Suho.
However, a controversial question that was asked by the MC to the Star Wars cast was “Do you know EXO?”. This became a phrase made popular with PSY‘s “Gangnam Style” when many began asking international stars, “Do you know ‘Gangnam Style’?” and has become dubbed a “stupid question” to ask.
Following the event on the 10th, John Boyega took to his Twitter account and wrote, “Lord. Thinking to audition for EXO so I can join them and have an excuse to stay in Seoul,” but later takes it back and says, “Actually, I’ll leave EXO alone, they don’t need me stumbling around while they glide on the screams of their hardcore fans.”
After Jogn Boyega’s tweet was posted on the morning of the 10th, tension grew to extremes between two fandoms. Star Wars fans were outraged by the event while EXO fans had thought John Boyega was being sarcastic with his remarks.”
Officials then clarified what happened, saying, “John Boyega’s SNS could be taken as a negative statement but he was extremely happy with the events in Korea. He was amazed by EXO’s popularity and his expression of that surprise was simply mistaken via his tweets. If there was any problem with the event that is on us the staff of the event. I hope fans are not too angry with what has happened.”
